Winter continues to be sparse on snowfall here in Utah, causing freeskiing events to be postponed till later in the season. The prayers for snow are ongoing, but the fun on and off the slopes continue. I am making the most of all my downtime off the daily freeskiing routines and enjoying every minute of it.

I would never say I take my lifestyle for granted, but I feel so fortunate to be able to live in the mountains and surround myself with the activities, sports, and people that I do. It is truly what makes me “tick” and is exactly what the definition of “living” is to me. Being inured and sidelined for nearly a year has made me realize this more than ever. Man, is it ever nice to be back!

When I was in Revelstoke, received the news that long-time friend, Sarah Burke had suffered serious injuries training in Park City, Utah. All I could think to myself was how strong of a person and athlete she is and that she would make it through these hard times. As I continued to stay in touch with close freeskiing friends the news day-to-day after her accident never got better. After nearly a week of fight from life-threatening injuries sustained to her brain, Sarah succumbed to those injuries and passed away at the age of 29.

This tragic event sits so uneasy for me and throughout the world of freeskiing and action sports. She was such a kind soul, amazing person, and outstanding athlete who single handedly, pushed the sport of women’s freeskiing to what it is today. we have truly lost our “Queen of Freeskiing”.

In the early 2000′s, I was lucky enough to be apart of the young talent emerging from the east coast. Freeze Magazine was just taking off, and freeskiing to myself and my close group of friends which consisted of Scott Hibbert, Dave Crichton, Sarah Burke, Andy Woods, Josh Novotny, Corey Grinnel, Garrett Brittain, Rory Will and others was a social glue and way of life for us. What was the early video developments of Josh Berman’s “Level 1 Productions” and documented photographically by Jeff Winterton was our own personal way to push the sport of skiing at the time. It is amazing to see where freeskiing has grown to in the past 12 years.

I feel so fortunate and honored to have Sarah in my life. She truly was a one-of-a-kind soul, that has left a huge hole and scar in the hearts of millions. She will never be forgotten. Ski in peace S.Burke.

The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series: Whistler

Due to a lack of snow in the northern hemisphere, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series relocated itself from Blue Mountain to Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada for a pipe-only event for its first stop of the tour. This stop carried serious magnitude, due the last-chance Winter XGames qualifiying slot it offered. The athletes delivered, and the event was amazing. I am honored to be apart of this open series for park and pipe freeskiing as the MC/Host. A huge “Thank You” and appreciation goes out to The North Face for developing and offering an open event series for athletes to become recognized and give them a platform to perform on. I am looking forward to the two final Park and Pipe Open Series events at Northstar, California and Waterville Vally, New Hampshire.

Getting a chance to work with Five Ten is an amazing opportunity and I could not be more stoked on their support and products. FWT: Revelstoke Wrap-up

For the third year in a row, the Freeskiing World Tour traveled to Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada to continue the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour that started off this past summer in South America. For the first time ever, we were able to globalize worldwide freeriding by combining the Swatch Freeride World Tour athletes (including snowboarders), The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, and the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour athletes all at one location. The best of the best were in attendance and it made for one hell of a show.

I look forward to future combined events like this; where the industries best freeriders get to battle it out on world-class helicopter-accessed terrain like they did this year in Revelstoke. What will 2013 bring in British Columbia?!
